An excerpt from Carol’s artist statement: “Seeking divine grace is a quest in many different religious traditions. In some ways that search is similar to creating a work of art. In the different steps in making a plate for an etching, each step produces a different state on its way to becoming a finished image.
“Statues and paintings, these art works by anonymous artisans, transcend the division between the sacred image and the profane stone or paint of their composition. They offer us glimpses into a vision of the mystical universe…. Our ancestors, the spirits, the saints, the divinities, are all around us, still taking an interest in our daily lives. Full of sublime compassion, they are watching over us.”
Carol Hayman is an award-winning photographer and printmaker who has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. The themes of her work include the people and landscapes of different parts of the world. Her career as a Professor of Anthropology at Austin Community College served to inspire her distinctive photographs and photo-based intaglio prints. She has traveled many times to Latin America, where she organized study tours to Peru. Her art has been exhibited in Mexico City and Lima, and she was the featured artist in a print exhibition in Bulgaria. She also has visited Indonesia and Hong Kong. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including photographic and printing anthologies. Turning photographs into fine art prints is a laborious but satisfying printmaking process. One of her photographs of Peru was chosen to be an art billboard on display at various intersections in Austin.
